DUSTIN

This week, enjoy this fantastic short video 'Dustin' and practise some of your writing and comprehension skills by having a go at the activities below.

As you are watching, have a think about these questions:

What do learn about Dustin at the very start?

What do you think is in the box?

What does Dustin think is in the box?

What do you think it is like to be Dustin?

What was life like before the robot arrived?

How has his life changed now?

TASKS

Task 1 - Write a short conversation

Rewatch the video from 3:04 to 3:31. Look at how Dustin is feeling!

What do you think Dustin would be saying to the robot at this point?

How will the robot respond?

Write a short conversation using correct speech punctuation and a suitable reporting clause to show how the character said it.

Have a look at the document below to remind yourself how to do this.

You could do this as a short comic, draw a few pictures and write the speech below it.

Task 2 - A diary entry

You can choose whether you write as if you are Dustin or the robot. Have a go at writing their diary entry for this day in the video.

Remember to write in the first person - I, describe emotions and how your body showed those emotions, try to use some fronted adverbials and complex sentences.

What happened?

How did it make you feel?

What were you thinking?

Below are some examples of diary entries. You could even present it like 'Diary of a Wimpy Kid'!

Task 3 - Write the next chapter

Imagine that there is going to be a second video about Dustin the dog and Dustin the robot...

What do you think would happen? Jot down your ideas. Use the story mountain below to help you.

What will they get up to next? Will they get up to some mischief or go on an adventure?

Where would it take place?

Would they go anywhere?

What could go wrong for them?

How will they overcome the problem?

Have a go at writing the next chapter in the story!

Remember to use all your Year 3 skills! (Fronted adverbials, complex sentences, powerful language, simple speech)

Reading comprehension

Read through the text once to look for any words that are unfamiliar and see if you can use your strategies to decode the word and then work out its meaning from the sentence. Try that first and then use a dictionary.

Read the text through again and talk through what you understand and what you are picturing after every paragraph.

Then have a go at the VIPERS questions.
