At Gatcombe Park Primary School, we aim to develop children as readers, writers and linguists who demonstrate these characteristics:
Speak and write fluently, so that they can communicate their ideas and emotions to others with an increasingly confident command of the spoken and written word
Understand that speaking and listening go hand in hand, are equal in importance, and that throughout society, being able to communicate effectively as a speaker and a listener will support social, emotional, intellectual, cultural and spiritual development for all
Read easily, fluently and with good understanding
Read often and widely for both pleasure and information, knowing it will develop social, emotional, intellectual, cultural and spiritual awareness of themselves and others
Be excited to broaden their vocabulary and take command of grammar and linguistic conventions for reading, writing and spoken language
Appreciate our rich and varied literary heritage
Write clearly, accurately and coherently, adapting their use of language and style for a
range of contexts, purposes and audiences
Speak confidently when demonstrating to others and participating in debate, remembering that listening is always a key part of presentational and discursive speaking
Use discussion in order to learn; they should be able to elaborate and explain clearly
